These days, it feels like most makeup tutorials call for dozens of steps and products, with an end result that's ultra made-up. But when you're in the mood for "no-makeup" makeup—a.k.a, a pared-down-yet-polished look that you could whip up quickly and that keeps the emphasis on your gorgeous skin—you might feel at a loss as to how to get it. Well, we rang up some of our favorite makeup artists for their expert advice. Below, six no-fail steps for obtaining that beautifully polished look you so deserve.
1. Prepara Tu Skin
Radiant skin is moisturized skin, so try the trick makeup artist Nick Barose, who works with Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Lupita Nyong'o and who is famously anti-crazy-contouring, uses: Massage a lightweight moisturizer onto your face. Then wait five minutes and blot the excess with a tissue.
2. Prioritize Primer
It's tempting to skip primer and head for the "real" makeup, but the pros want to convince you otherwise. "The texture of a gel-based primer, like Chanel Base Lumière Illuminating Makeup Base [$48, chanel.com], instantly makes skin look like it's had a moisture boost, all while diminishing large pores and other imperfections," says makeup artist Andrew Sotomayor. "Apply a pea-sized amount all over the skin with a brush, starting from the center of the face and blending outward."

3. Top With Concealer
Your spot cover-up should always go on before your foundation. And "never use your fingers, or it'll be gloppy and cakey," warns Barose. He recommends Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer ($29, bloomingdales.com) and suggests patting it under your eyes with a brush, then smoothing with a sponge, like Beautyblender Micro Mini sponge ($18, macys.com).
4. Add Foundation
Take a good look at your face to determine which parts need more and which need less. Then get that real-skin look by applying liquid foundation with a brush. Sweep it across your face for a lighter look, or make it more opaque by tapping additional coverage over any redness or unevenness. "I'll use one pump of Clé de Peau Beauté Radiant Fluid Foundation [$125, nordstrom.com] for a sheer look," says Sotomayor, "or two pumps for medium coverage." (Try EcoTools Flat Foundation Brush, $46, ecotools.com).
